Wind Energy

>Table of contents      Print

Western France is the largest energy center on the French Atlantic coast. It provides a complete environment for the development of both onshore and offshore wind farms.

The opportunities for developing offshore wind farm projects are highly concentrated on the Atlantic coast and the objective of development of the onshore wind power farms should reach 950MW by 2010.

The environment is complete for successful developement: local commitment of the municipalities, a strong seaport, many on and offshore testing platforms , 4 clusters (engineering, composites and eco-industry), a market ready to be developped by local strong industries (i.e. STX) and many training and labs to back up the projects.

A strong seaport

Port of Nantes Saint Nazaire

The port of Nantes Saint-Nazaire is specialized in wind turbines bladesunloading. It is also interested in setting up a logistics and manufacturing center dedicated to off-shore applications (wind energy, wave energy…)

Lifting capacity up to 400 tons
    Storage capacity:
    • towers up to 60 m
    • blades up to 40 m

Industrial leaders located in Western France

    • Custom-designed slewing ring bearings for wind turbines: ROLLIX-DEFONTAINE (world leader)
    • Drive systems and alternators: LEROY-SOMER (world leader)
    • Engineering and design offices for the development of onshore wind farms: Altech, Windspectra, Valorem, WKN France,…
    • Engineering offices and operators of offshore wind farms: EDF, WPD offshore, Nass&Wind Offshore
    • Equipment maintenance :  Chastagner, Camom (Eiffage), Fixator, Alta Industrie, Apave, GEO, Rotor Kontrol, KDE France Energy
    • Subcontractors: STX

    Large-scale testing platforms

A unique concentration in the world :

    • Within the Fluid Mechanics laboratory at the Nantes Central Engineering School: a onshore trial platform and a trial platform in the sea (SEM-REV) which is the 2nd experimental ocean site in the world.

    • within the Ecole Centrale de Nantes : platforms in hydrodynamics, dynamics (materials, crash tests), high speed machining, durability mechanics, virtual reality : a towing tank, a wave tank, a multiflap wavemaker, a wind tunnel used to make PIV measurement for the study of lower urban atmosphere, four test-stands for testing internal combustion engines.

    • within the LCPC (Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées): a cable fatigue testing bench, a vibration bench, a geotechnical centrifuge, a geophysical test site, a climatic chamber, a pavements material laboratory, a pavement fatigue carrousel, a reference track for characterizing pavement surfaces, a structural test facility, a pavement material mixing test facility, a test facility for research and study of positioning systems, a magnetic resonance imaging device, an experimental site and a partial reverbaration room for environmental acoustics...

    • within the CSTB (Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment) : a climatic wind tunnel, the LABE (European Laboratory of Building Acoustics), the Base Feu to test materials or parts of structures under realistic conditions, the ARIA to study the sanitary quality of building products, facilities and structures, an immersion room equipped with graphic supercomputers and three-dimensional vision and sound systems to review building projects within their urban environment, the technical platform for architecture, softwares to test acoustics, lighting, smoke removal and the evacuation of persons, thermal engineering and comfort, thermohygromechanics...

    4 competitive clusters

    pole Genie Civil Eco Constructions

The Western Civil Engineering cluster is a platform for trial and studies in civil engineering. It is specialised in studying civil engineering works that have a complex or extreme situation with the ground, the water or the atmosphere (stability, durability, life cycle, climatic conditions, environement)

    pole EMC2

The EMC² competitive cluster for materials combines differents sections of the mechanics industry in the implementation of metallic and composite materials in industry.
Its aim is to mutually organise R&D projects. It comprises 80 SMEs/SMIs, 50 laboratories, training centres and economic development organisations. Around 30 projects are certified and financed each year.

    Eco-industry

The Eco-industrycluster is focused on the development of renewable energies by gathering companies, R&D centers, technology platforms and training centers around the issue of eco-industry. It helps them to develop and support innovative projects.

The wind cluster of Le Mans is located in the center of the Western France wind parks (comprising Britanny, Pays de la loire, Southern Normandy, Centre, Western Ile de France). It provides a full maintenance, R&D and training offer for wind companies.

    Training and R&D labs
    • Engineering schools: Nantes School of Mines, Universities, Tehncological University Institutes,
    • Technical schools: secondary schools, GRETA (maintenance techniciens, BZEE certification), CNAM (Renewable energy licence)
    • Labs: LAUM (Acoustic laboratory of the Maine University, 2nd in Europe), ISMANS, ENSIM, CTTM, Fluid Mechanics laboratory (IRCCyN), thermokinetics laboratory...

If you want to attend this event, contact us

The ENR GREEN business meetings is the first event (business convention and congress) dedicated to the renewable energies industry (solar, energy performance of buildings, wind, biomass, geothermics, bio-fuels, hydraulics) and gathering all the players: contractors, manufacturers of materials and equipments, sub-contractors, design offices, engineering consultants, elected representatives...). It takes place in Le Mans.
